Man wielding a knife tried to enter Dohány Street Synagogue – video

A man with a beard dressed in camouflage tried to enter the synagogue on Dohány Street, then stripped half-naked and brandished a knife, reports Index.

The security service of the Dohány Street Synagogue in the 7th district of Budapest notified the Budapest Police Headquarters’ Operations Management Center at 19:14 on 13 February 2023 because a man had tried to enter the building about an hour earlier, the police said on their website.

The security guards, at the same time as they reported the incident, sent CCTV footage of the incident, which clearly shows the bearded man in military clothing, stripped to his shirt and holding a knife.

Since a possible terrorist motive could not be ruled out in connection with the incident, TEK reconnaissance teams identified the perpetrator and his whereabouts after extended forensic data collection, and the 29-year-old Polish citizen was arrested by the TEK operational unit at a hostel near the synagogue where he was staying.

The Budapest police officers questioned him on suspicion of armed assault, detained him, and submitted a motion for his arrest. The Budapest Police Headquarters will continue the proceedings.
